The second level tournament for European basketball gets underway again this week and after a couple of weeks off, the teams will be keen to show that they are ready to make this year an exciting year. With teams dropping down from the Euroleague, there will be some big name’s but this just means that the smaller teams have the chance to pull off an upset or two.

There are 3 games taking place on Tuesday 5th January and the remaining 13 games take place on Wednesday 6th January.

The Tuesday 5th January games are:

Group I

  • Limoges CSP v Ewe Baskets Oldenburg

Group L

  • MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg v Stelmet Zielona Gora

Group N

  • Szolnoki Olaj v Dinamo Banca Di Sardegna Sassari

All three of the Tuesday night games feature teams dropping down from the Euroleague. In Group I, Limoges are clear favourites in their game against Ewe Baskets and taking them at -6.5 at odds of 1.90, is likely to be a good bet. 6 January 2016 Eurocup Regular Season Group J – ALBA Berlin v EA7 Emporio Armani Milan

This is a game between two teams who have a good pedigree in European basketball. Last season both teams performed very well in the Euroleague but this season has been different. The German side didn’t qualify for the Euroleague this campaign, and delivered a 5-5 record in the regular season of the Eurocup. The Italian team had a dismal time in the Euroleague and will be looking at the Eurocup as an opportunity to recover and show that they have something about them.

Elemdin Kikanovic has been the key player for ALBA Berlin this season, notching an average of 14.8 points per game so far in the Eurocup. Will Cherry has been another good player for the Germans this season and he has contributed with a number of timely rebounds over the course of the Eurocup campaign this season. This match represents a chance for the Germans to show that they can mix it with teams of the the EUroleague standard and they’ll be keyed up for this game in Berlin.

Alessandro Gentile has been the key player for EA7 Emporio Armani Milan and in 6 games in the Euroleague this season he has notched 120 points, resulting in the rather impressive tally of 20 points per game. Given the fact that Milan have been in terrible form this season, you have to say that Gentile has been in tremendous form and without him, Milan fans would have had very little to cheer/. Injuries hampered his performance when the Italians needed him the most but if he is clear of injuries in 2016, Milan may experience some joy in the first half of the year.

6 January 2016 Eurocup Regular Season Group J – Banvit Bandirma v FC Bayern Munich

Another team dropping down from the Euroleague is FC Bayern Munich but in Banvit Bandirma, they face a team who are more than happy to be present in the Last 32 of the Eurocup. However, this doesn’t mean that they are content to take whatever they can get, this may see the Turkish side play with a freedom that challenges their opponents at this stage of the competition.

Dominique Johnson from the United States has been the key player for the home side this season and if he can hit form in the Eurocup, they may venture even further. He has managed an average of 13.7 points this season so far.

For Bayern, Alex Renfroe was one of the key players of the Euroleague regular season and he managed an average of 10.1 points per game from a very tough group. If he can continue that form into the Eurocup, it is likely that the German side will go a long way in the rest of the competition.
