New rules at the beginning of the Euroleague 2022/23 season
The Euroleague has announced a number of rule changes that will take effect immediately for the 2022/23 season. These new rules will also have their effect on basketball betting.
Among these new rules are:
- the addition of a foul on the throw-in
- the elimination of the time limits in which a coach can request a challenge
- the possibility of choosing for the advancement of the ball after a timeout in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter or extra time
- the possibility for the referees to review any act of violence on the pitch or on the bench at any time
Throw-in foul
The new throw-in foul awards the attacking team one free throw, plus possession for any foul committed before the ball is thrown back into play in a throw-in situation in the last 2 minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime.
Time limits for coaches
Coaches will be able to challenge any of the 16 situations foreseen during the whole match. This means that they can contest a call at any point in the match and not just in late match situations. The coaches however, continue to have only one challenge available per game.
Possession after time-out in the last two minutes
When there’s two minutes or less left in the fourth quarter or in extra time, after a successful score or a foul/ violation committed in the paint, the coach of the team in possession of the ball after a timeout can choose whether to restart the game with a throw-in from the end line in the opposing team’s court, or at the point closest to where the game was stopped.
Acts of violence
The referees are entitled to immediately stop the game to examine any acts of violence, or potential acts of violence, involving the players and/ or persons authorised to sit on the team benches.

2022/23 Euroleague Final Four
The winners of the Playoff match-ups will progress to the Final Four, which will be played in May 2023. The host city of the Final Four weekend will probably be Berlin, Germany. Since there is no official announcement, we’re only guessing.
Berlin is the hometown of Euroleague contender ALBA Berlin who plays in the Mercedes Benz Arena with a seating capacity for 14,500 fans. Berlin was the host for the 2021/22 season before the Euroleague Final Four was moved to the Stark Arena in Belgrade, because of COVID-19 restrictions in Germany. The EuroBasket 2022 Finals were also held in the Mercedes Benz Arena, where Spain, led by the Hernangomez brothers Juancho (also known by his alter ego Bo Cruz) and Willy, won another European Championship.
