FIBA Europe Cup 2016/17
The 2016/17 season of the FIBA Europe Cup will be the second campaign. The tournament will take on greater significance this season given that the FIBA Basketball Champions League tournament will now be taking place above the tournament.
This has led to a shift in the format of the tournament for this season.
Regular Season
The regular season of the 2016/17 FIBA Europe Cup will feature 10 groups. 7 of these groups will include four teams and 3 of these groups will include three teams. Each team will play their opponents twice in the regular season.
Passage to the next round of the tournament will be given to:
- The 10 group winners
- The 10 group runners-up
- The four best ranked third placed teams – with two teams coming from each conference
This will see 24 teams battling it out in the second phase of the regular season. These teams will be split into 6 groups of four teams, with each team playing each other twice.
Passage to the next round of the tournament will be given to:
- The 6 group winners
- The 2 best runners up
These teams will be joined by 8 teams dropping down from the FIBA Basketball Champions League to make up the Last 16 of the 2016/17 FIBA Europe Cup.
Knockout Stage
The knockout stage will consist of:
- Round of 16 Play-offs
- Quarter-Final Play-offs
- Semi-Final Play—offs
- Final Play-off
All of these ties will be carried out over a two-legged format. Unlike the 2015/16 FIBA Europe Cup season, there will be no Final Four for this season’s event. This means that there is no scheduled third and fourth play-off round and the semi-finals and final match will be played out over two games this year as opposed to being played out over one game in a neutral venue like it was last season.
The scheduled dates for the final of the 2016/17 FIBA Europe Cup are 19th of April 2017 and 26th of April 2017.
