In a best of three state of affairs in a quarter-final, you are always likely to get a mixture of teams progressing after two games, and clashes needing three ties to resolve who progresses.
This is the case in this year’s EuroCup.
We have two teams who have booked in their place in the semi-final, banking a 2-0 record after the first two games in the quarters. However, the other two tie3s were 1-1 at this point, and this means Wednesday 31st March sees two games as we wait to see who makes their way through to the EuroCup semi-finals.
Game 2 results
- Herbalife Gran Canaria 66-64 Boulogne Metropolitans 92 (2-0)
- Joventut Badalona 78-84 Virtus Segafredo Bologna (0-2)
- Buducnost VOLI Podgorica 64-74 AS Monaco (1-1)
- Lokomotiv Kuban Kranosdar 86-74 UNICS Kazan (1-1)
Gran Canaria are in the semi-finals of the EuroCup for the third time in their history. The Friday night was a close call, and Boulogne were in the match until the death. AJ Slaughter helped himself to double digits in the victory.
The hosts rallied late on, but it was too little and definitely too late to halt Bologna booking their place in the semi-finals. This is the first time they have reached this stage, having missed out in 2003/04 and last season, when the tournament wasn’t played out. Virtus have bounced back from and they were in complete control, until that late rally, in this match.
AS Moncao grabbed a road win to keep their semi-final dreams alive, and they now have home-court advantage in the final game of the series. Then again, the two previous games have been won by the away side, so home-court advantage might not count for a lot! Rob Gray delivered 20 points for the victors.
Lokomotiv had a massive win on Thursday night last week, and they will travel to Kazan for the decider with a bit of confidence. Nigel Williams-Goss had a big showing, with 25 points in the win.
